A 17-Year-Old Boy May Save Elephants with AI


Rainforests have insects, birds, frogs, monkeys and more. Some rainforests in
Africa have African forest elephants. They eat fruit. This helps new trees
grow.
雨林裡有很多動物，例如昆蟲、鳥、青蛙、猴子等等。有些非洲的雨林還住著大象。

But some people hunt these elephants. They use guns. They sell the elephants'
long ivory tusks.
但是有些人會用槍來獵殺這些大象，把象牙賣出去。

Scientists want to keep these elephants safe. They put many microphones in
rainforests. They listened for gunshots.
科學家想保護大象，所以在雨林裡面放了很多麥克風來收集聲音，想追尋槍聲。

But listening for gunshots was very hard. Tree branches broke. Rain fell.
Monkeys called. All of these can sound like gunshots!
但要分辨槍聲可不簡單。樹枝斷裂、下雨、猴子叫聲，聽起來都像槍聲。

A 17-year-old boy made an AI program. It uses the scientists' microphones. It
listens for gunshots.

The AI knows what sounds are gunshots. It knows what sounds are not gunshots.
The AI also knows where the gunshots are. This lets police catch the hunters.
